seveneighteen Special: Hot 97’s Funk Flex Spins 90’s Hip-Hop (10th Anniversary)

Legendary Hot 97 DJ Funk Flex spins 90’s Hip-Hop for your 4th of July weekend!

On July 4th, 2007, Flex spun five hours of 90’s hip-hop on New York’s Hot 97. Playing hits from Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang Clan, Tim Dawg (!!!), Grand Puba, Boot Camp Clik, Redman, EPMD, Gang Starr, Eric B & Rakim, Scarface, UMC, LL Cool J and more, Flex was all over the map, and if you’re a 90’s kid like me, you loved every minute of it.  As you get ready for your Independence Day BBQ’s, if you’re still stuck on what music to play or don’t want to hire a DJ or rely on Spotify playlists, just throw this on and let it rock. (Warning: it’s a little East-Coast centric. Also, Flex played a lot of vinyl, so there’s some skips and live editing for the radio. So what?!?)

The entire show (excluding commercials) is here as a podcast. We also have a playlist to the show (broken up into four parts).

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

Fresh Cut Radio Show: Week 29 | @CarverTheGreat

This week’s mix is a combination of some of the popular records produced by Metro Boomin (want some more…) and DJ Carver The Great’s favorite Afrobeat records that have come out recently. Particularly, Jidenna’s latest single, “Little Bit More” which is currently his favorite record of the moment. The last record, “Standard” by Reekado Banks, is also a banger. Enjoy!

You can check out DJ Carver The Great’s hip-hop mix every Saturday from 4-7 pm EST on The Fresh Cut Radio Show, which airs on Durban’s 99.5 Gagasi FM in South Africa. You can listen online at http://www.gagasiradio.fm

PS: It’s a clean version, so feel free to play around your kids… or your parents.

Fresh Cut Radio Show: Week 27 | @CarverTheGreat

Need some new music? Look no further than our resident DJ Carver The Great!

This week’s mix is an ode to the boom-bap NY sound that made us fall in love with hip-hop in the 90s. Some of the standout records on here include ASAP Ferg’s “Don’t Mind” featuring  Fabolous & French Montana and “Blow A Check” by Zoey Dollarz. Carver’s personal favorite is the opening track, the cathartic “Poppin” by Rico Richie.

If you’re ever in a dialogue about how the “New York Sound” is no longer relevant, please cite this mix. Enjoy!
